Today we learned about labour weekend and how it was created and celebrated. It was a cool session and if you want to know about it here it is.
Samuel Parnell was a pivotal figure in the establishment of Labour Day in New Zealand. A carpenter by trade, he became a prominent advocate for workers rights in the 19th century. In 1840, Parnell successfully negotiated for an eight hour workday, a significant improvement over the prevailing work conditions, which often required long hours.
His efforts and the growing labor movement led to the first official Labour Day celebration on October 28, 1890, in New Zealand. This event marked a turning point, symbolizing the fight for fair labor practices and the recognition of workers contributions. Parnell’s advocacy not only improved conditions for workers in his time but also laid the groundwork for labor rights movements globally, making him an important historical figure in the context of labor rights and the celebration of Labour Day.
